sad and senseless. we're learning more about the young boy who was shot and killed in his own home. good evening. police have identified that boy as 9-year-old oscar fuentes. today the boy's family told news4 that he was shot through his front tour as they tried to get away from a robber. michael has that report tonight. >> reporter: 9-year-old oscar

fuentes, the little boy killed by a bullet, shot right through the front tour of his family's columbia heights apartment as he looked out the peep hole. it happened around 10:00 saturday night. the boy's family says the 21 fire was retaliation because they wouldn't hand over money to a robber moments earlier as they walked together into the apartment building. >> translator: the man told my brother-in-law and me to give him money but we didn't pay attention so he went back up stairs. >> the boy thank you translator said he followed them up to the second floor part. >> translator: when i noticed he was following us, i went inside and put the chain on the door. that's when the little boy went to look through the peep hole and we heard something but we at any time know he had been shot. >> reporter: fuentes went to his room and collapsed. when police arrived they administered first-aid but he died at the hospital a short time later.

word councilmember went to the hospital sunday morning angry that there is no lock on the building's front tour. he calls this one of the worst crimes that he can remember. >> it tears me up to think some boy was shot in the safety of his own home. >> reporter: as the family was preparing to celebrate the holidays, they're now dealing with this sudden and incomprehensible loss. >> translator: he was a very well behaved child. the teacher always said he was her best student. >> reporter: in northwest washington, news4. >> the boy's family says they cannot afford his burial expenses. police did question someone but so far no arrests. we could learn more about the shooting death of a person. a 17-year-old has been charged in that killing. there will be a press conference on the arrest tomorrow. rawlings was shot wednesday after leaving a friend's funeral. it was the second tragedy for

the rawlings familiar had i. george was the older brother. back in 2007, he was shot by an offduty police officer who was trying to retrieve a stolen mini bike. switching gears, the other big story we're following, the washington redskins decided to show up. the skins trounced the broncos at fed-ex. lindsey has more. >> reporter: hey, craig, it was interesting to hear the players after this game. they were all very thankful that they were able to smile for a change here in this locker room. today it was really the redskins' offense that bailed out the defense. the bottom line is the redskins get a much needed win over the broncos. 27-17. i'll tell you what. things did not start out pretty at all for the washington redskins. the broncos' receivers were wide open. they had a plethora of issues. and look at this. fourth play of the gail. kyle orton and at quarterback for the broncos, dropped back. he has all kinds of time.

where is the coverage? brandon marshal is there to make the wild open catch. just like that they were up 7-0. but first time in a long time, the redskins' offense bailed them out. an 11-play drive with this one-yard touchdown. the redskins go up 24-17. they would win it 27-17. jim said it feels good to get back to winning. >> we had a desert experience for the last, very arid, if you will, the last few weeks. to be able to come out with a win, you almost don't know how to feel. yet we remember very quickly. and we sure like winning. it was exciting for our football team, for our franchise. for our fans. >> jim zorn, extremely pleased with his team. they had an impressive perfmance by the offensive line and we'll talk about all of that plus more later in sports. >> good to see those guys smiling for a change, too.

>> thanks. a new sign of the times. the redskins did not confiscate that sign or any other sign bashing the team's owner or its management are now allowed. the team has turned the policy to ban signs like those from redskins games. the owner says fans should be free to express their feelings. of course, within the boundaries of good taste. the missing mother of a north carolina girl is now charged with human trafficking and felony child prostitution. shaniya daifg has been missing since tuesday. police have arrested a man and charged him with kidnapping. surveillance video shows him carrying her into a hotel room. there is no word yet if the mother's arrest is related to the child's disappearance. the justice department continues to take heat for its decision to try the accused' 9/11 mastermind and four others in new york city. the trial would be held in a

civilian courtroom not far from ground zero, with the prisoners being transferred from the guantanamo bay detention center. critics have argued it puts manhattan at greater risk for retaliation. they were also concerned about the prospects of transferring the prisoners on american soil. >> that makes no sense to me to be granting him his wish. he should be tried in a military tribunal. >> an important thing for me is that they pay the ultimate price for what they did to us. >> there are also safety concerns about plans to turn a northern illinois prison into a detain center that would house them. they said leasing or selling it would create jobs in a struggling area. federal officials are expected to inspect the thomas correctional center tomorrow. still ahead, birds strike.

we'r following breaking news near elkridge, maryland. a person has jumped off an overpass from highway 1 hundred to i-95 below that person that jumped landed o a vehicle that was traveling southbound. the person who jumped died. no one inside the vehicle was hurt. that incident has severe had i backed up traffic on i-95 southbound near highway 100. peel pass along leading information as it becomes available. meanwhile, investigators plead that mechanical issues started a fire that distorted the d.c. school bus today. take a look at that picture. it broke out late this morning in northeast. it took at least two dozen firefighters to get the fire under control. the buses, you can see, are destroyed. two other buses were also damaged. a local man is speaking out about his frightening experience aboard a plane that hit a flock.

birds just after takeoff last night. the frontier airlines plane was on its way from kansas city to denver. birds flew into both engines. luckily no one was hurt and only one of the engines lost power. the pilots were able to rush it to the airport and land safely. meanwhile, they describe t dramatic moment in the cab 81 after the birds hit. >> outthe right side of the windows on the right side, you can see nashz of light, sparks and flames. smoke immediately started coming into the cabin. you casmell something that was burning, objection had i something out of the engine. >> the captain saved the lives of the people. a common problem, leaves. you've seen them everywhere. a policy change that has left some local residents without anywhere to put those leaves. plus, chuck has the workweek forecast when we come back.

it's that time of year. leaves are everywhere. as folks face the daunting task of removing them, they have a new problem. the county is no longer collecting leaves. here's more on this. >> reporter: you know, you get enough of these together and it can be a beautiful sight. when they fall on lawns, some homeowners don't think it is so beautiful. they need to know there are some changes in the way the leaves

are gotten rid of in prince george's county. for the past 25 year the residents in 351 communities rake their leaves into a neat pile at the curb. they are sucked up by a county vacuum truck. but now the county is no longer up to the task fiscal had i. the county is growing faster than the trees. >> the idea was to expand but there have been other budget constraints. this year as we were preparing for the fy 10 bug, the county council had to sit down, make some hard choices. >> now the truck will have to pass you by. though you may see them out and about at the end of the fall. >> sometime in december, fending upon the weather. we will be sending our trucks out and they'll be vacuuming the leaves that have gotten into the streets to keep them out of the storm drains. we have to keep the storm drains and we have to keep the channels open. >> reporter: in the mean time,

residents will have to bag them and put them on curbside on regular yard collection days. while that could prove to be a problem for some, efforts have been made to help. >> we have tried to work with senior citizens who don't have the capacity or can't afford it. we tried to put them in touch with the boy scouts. churches have stepped up. >> reporter: now the word is doing it the old way can get you a citation. >> our ient is not to fine. it is just to have folks comply. >> reporter: after a couple of warnings, you could get a fine of up to $100. some jurisdictions still do it so you need to check. >> appreciate. that you know what? here's the thing. if you had to be out raking leaves today, a perfect day to do it. >> this is two sundays in a row now with sunshine and 70 plus degree weather. last sunday it was 74. >> what about the workweek? >> let's focus on how nice today

was, shall we? a beauty outside. no doubt about it. everyone town on the national mall taking a look around. the smithsonian castle, take a look. even if you had to rake leaves. look at that. sparkling blue skies, temperatures in the 70s. tourists with shorts on. it's washington, all right. no doubt about it. great weather outside. our high temperature today official had i at national airport made it to 70 degrees. that's average for october 3. our current temperature, our average high is 58 degrees. 15 degrees higher than average. we love it like that. temperatures around the area, generally on the way back town for the evening. skill 67 downtown. already, mid 50s in the western suburbs. be ready for another cool evening. certainly not cold by november's standards.

temperatures still in the 50s and 60s along the eastern seaboard. there is a weak little weather front primarily to the north. the main impact we'll feel is our winds will come back to the north and cooler air had start to spill in. today we were in the 70s. tomorrow we're going to step back about eight or ten degrees with high temperatures only in the low to mid 60s. still a bargain by november's standards but not quite as nice as it has been. it is keeping the north to northwesterly wind. a very complicated weather picture out here across the midwest. could bring as you chance for rain as early as thursday evening. should be out of here in time for next weekend but a lot of uncertainty passed for wednesday. we're positive, clear skies, mild temperatures on the way town. upper 40s in the western suburbs by 11:00 tonight. tomorrow morning, a cheer sky, paxy dense fog possible. not as much fog as we had this

morning and whatever fog we do have won't last as it did. just some fair weather cumulus clouds as the air spills in. upper 50s in the high spots to low to mid 60s in the area. our seven-day forecast, how about 65 with sunshine for tomorrow. that's pretty nice. 57 on tuesday. that's an average high temperature for this time. year so we can't complain about that. chance for rain back into the forecast for the second half of thursday and through the day on friday. we'll have to move those rain drops forward or backward hail bit because that storm system will be a real bear to forecast. i'm optimistic for next weekend. >> thank you. when we come back, we'

redskins with a win streak. you have to wonder where they were the first half of the season. >> very good point. i think there was a collective feeling of relief in this locker room after the game. the redskins today were dealing with an offensive line that was in its fifth combination since the start of the season themselves made it work themselves reestablished the game without clinton portis. something the veterans kept saying today, they feel it was so important to get back to the type of football that has really worked for this team in the past. specially when you look at the opponents. they beat the broncos 27-17. i have to till, it didn't start out well for the redskins. not at all of kyle orton went to

work quick had i. looking for a receiver. wide open, brandon marshall. you have to ask, where was the coverage? 40 yards for the touchdown. it took 2:14. four plays to find the end zone for denver. for just the second time all season, the redskins answer with a touchdown in the second quarter. third and goal. the washington, too. jason campbell finds todd yoder, a two-yard touchdown. the second td in two games. the broncos again expose the defense. four minutes to go in the first. the skins treating receivers like the play. orton to marshall. a 75-yard touchdown. denver gets ahead 14-7. that was when the wheels were falling off for the redskins' defense. the redskins go to the bag of tricks. this is priceless. 6:30 left and field goal formation, not for long. hunter smith, the punter, takes the direct snap. executes to perfection.

the redskins practice this all week. but putter to putter there and it is called by mike sellars. the skins tie it up before the half. they knew they had to do something this time. it was just what the doctor ordered. loving it. fourth quarter, the redskins held the broncos to 17 points. here, churning up the yard like butter. it lead to the field goal. it would tie it at 17. it spelled redemption in the fourth quarter. chris simms was in it for kyle orton. throws deep. deangelo hall. 23 there for the interception. his fourth of the season. deanglo takes it 30 yards. for some reason he decides to have the lateral. luckily, he takes more yards and gets to the to the washington 40. the redskins would make it count. just barely. the redskins with the opportunity. third and three at the denver 32.

jason campbell to devin thomas. the individual effort was amazing on this play. he sticks with it. cranks it for 27 yards. clinton portis, always guy that loved what he saw in that one. that's because here's the trusty beck. one yard line. pounds through to the end stone. the redskins score more than 17 points for the first time all season. they beat ten verdict 37-17. a much needed win. it has gotten so bad for this tale, the redskins said they've been getting advice from all over. >> opponents today, my mom was telling me all week and i think she called the coaches saying all we need to do is have fun out there. if we're having fun, it's the lord's will and things will get done. we went out and had fun and i guess we had to win. >> albert haines worth saying his mom had put in a call to the team. i talked to him and he said he did talk to her but everybody is very happy to get this win today. it makes a huge difference as

the redskins look ahead to very tough opponents. a big thing was the running game. the redskins ran for a total of 174 yards. a huge part of that was beck who got the start in place of clinton portis. he is one of the toughest on the team. >> reporter: it is ball the win. in his first start since 2006, he busted out with 114 yards. the best game by a redskins running back this season. he was certain had i the main ingredient in a rare redskins winning recipe. >> you take the last two quarters of the atlanta game and i think the whole game today. we have a whole did you have feel this offense. we're pounding people. when you get that run game going, it opens up other stuff. >> i felt like it was downhill. i felt like we could move the ball. we kept running and he ran as well. >> that's not the only one stepping up.

at some point, he have single unit on the team made a play. >> we worked so hard and we're finally playing as a team. when we came out, just played, we said the main thing, all week long, we can play anybody in this league if we just keep fighting. and everybody came out. >> it was so many big plays today. you never know when the big play will happen if i had to pick a big may, got it into position. we were able to score more than 17 points and get the win. >> just to get everybody involved. especially with the young guys. with the running back situation. multiple running backs. everybody switching in and out and making plays. i think it gave a fresh new base and kept us in a good rhythm. >> you held on to the ball for a little while.

>> we weren't trying to trick anybody. we felt like we could run and get a score out of it and that's what we did. danny came out with the great play. >> so hunter the punter smith is now run for a touchdown and thrown for a touchdown this season. pretty safe to say he is the only punter in the nfl to have opportunity so. the redskins will likely need to pull another rabbit out of the hat next week as they head down to dallas. back to you in the locker room. >> the redskins know they had mistakes to fix. especially defense giving up big maze themselves do feel they came a stem closer to reestablishing redskins football. >> thank you so much. we'll see you back here tonight at 11:00.
